For some people this might seem surprising, why would a coach hire another personal trainer to train them?
In 2011 I decided I would train for a physique competition in Canada (Fitness star). This involved getting down to very low body fat levels and developing a physique that was athletic looking and natural.
After 4 months of dedicated training I placed 3rd in my group and at that time was in the best shape of my life. One of the major reasons why I managed to achieve this goal was my friend, and coach, Ian Graham.
Ian had won two physique competitions himself at the time and now has his pro card. The fact he had been there and done it all before made things very easy for me and allowed me to concentrate on my training and diet with the confidence I was doing everything correctly and making progress as quickly as possible.
After fitness star I decided I wanted to get back to training for strength. I enjoyed getting lean and seeing visible abs for the first time, but I live in Ireland and spend 99% of the time with a top on and much preferred heavy lifting over high reps and conditioning.
I was already pretty strong for my size back then but knew I had to get make that extra bit of progress I needed a coach to help me.
About 2 ½ months out from my first competition I got in contact with my friend James. I figured that I needed to be accountable to another coach and have a program that I wasn’t writing. When you write your own training plans you tend to add in what you like rather than what you need.
Those few months being accountable to another coach produced some of the best training results. Just having someone to check in to and meet up with made me train that little harder and not skip sessions. I made hit some decent PB’s and being honest was the last time I really focused in my training.
If you have goals and you want to reach them then invest in a coach or trainer who has experience of achieving that specific goal. The best athletes in the world have coaches and trainers. Even they need people to motivate them and be accountable to. I can honestly say that working with experienced coaches such as Ian and James has helped me become a better coach myself and transfer that knowledge on to my own clients.
Invest in yourself and reach your goals.
