The IDFPA National Powerlifting Single Lifts 2014 gave a chance for new team members to get their first meet under their belts. Whilst experienced lifters such as Clare Connolly, Bryan Kavanagh and I were not competing due to organising and refereeing at the event, the new team members certainly didn’t hold back in getting some serious numbers on the board.
Hazel Hu was the lightest lifter on the team weighing in at 50kg. Hazel has only been powerlifting training a few weeks and had never squatted over 40kg. Hazel put up some impressive numbers with an 80kg squat, 45kg bench and 107.5kg deadlift.
Siobhan Hayes and Emer O’Driscoll were unfortunate not to break personal bests with both of them missing their 2nd and 3rd lifts due to depth and a double bounce. Despite no PB in the squat Siobhan bounced back to win the 55.5kg bench press class with a very solid bench of 55kg. Siobhan placed 2nd in the squat event despite missing two of her lifts.
Emer finished 2nd in all 3 lifts despite not breaking any personal bests and missing her 3rd deadlift. The day hadn’t gone as well as hoped for the two women, but to still win the 55 bench and place so high without breaking any PB’s shows the improvement they have both made since their last competitions. I’m looking forward to the Siobhan and Emer hitting some big totals at the National championships in a few weeks.
The day hadn’t had gone as well as hoped for the two girls but to finish so high in their classes with opening lifts shows progress was made from their last competitions.
Last but not least in the female class was Linh Nguyen. Linh opened with a world record squat attempt at 110kg. The squat flew up with ease and Linh then attempted a 117.5kg missing the second lift and then missing the 3rd due to a very close call on depth. Linh finished first in the Female squat event with her 110kg squat.
Overall I was really happy with how the girls performed. For the first time in over a year everyone didn’t break personal bests. However they all still managed to finish high and even win their weight classes and an overall event with openers and sub-par numbers to what they had probably hoped for. This is actually encouraging that the girls can still compete without having to break a personal record.
15 year old Shane McCarthy from our Junior Athlete development (JAD) course made some impressive lifts with an 80kg squat and 110kg deadlift. The 15 year old has been working with Danny and JAD for several months and shows signs of becoming a talented lifter.
New comers Martin Green, Paddy O’Sullivian, David Maloney, Louie Warren and Mark Hodgson all did great for their first meet being competitive in their weight classes. Martin finished 2nd in all 3 lifts, whilst 17 year old Mark Hodgsen squatted 135 and deadlifted a 175 with ease. Overall Martin, Mark and Louie finished second in their weight and age classes all getting personal bests and gaining some experience for the full power in April.
Last but not least is 21 year old Deividas Bedros. Deividas won both the 67.5kg squat and deadlift open class despite being a junior. Deividas unofficially broke the world junior squat record with a 155kg squat.
This will not stand due to less than required lifters being drug tested on the day but I’m sure he will break the record at the next meet. He will however have a national record to show for his hard work.
Despite an influx of new team members I am confident we can be very competitive in 2014. Our goal is to be a dominant force in Irish drug free powerlifting. The new male lifters that have come on board have their work cut out in the 67.5 and 75kg classes but I am confident that we can go on make 2014 our most successful year yet.
Next stop will be the full national championships in April where we will aim to qualify for the world championships in Moldova and win some national titles in the process.
